PROS AND CONS OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
Artificial intelligence is big right now, with every software company worth its weight weighing in on the matter. Both Google and Microsoft are dabbling in their own versions of artificial intelligence, and it looks like the era of the AI personal assistant, a la Sonny in I, Robot, is not too far away. But it remains to be seen whether the AI would turn against us, as predicted by so much of the science fiction horror genre, or whether we would be able to harness the immense potential and actually keep on using it to our advantage.
WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE?
In layman’s terms, it is basically a computer that is designed to perform tasks that would normally be undertaken by a human. That is, something beyond logistics and computation, and requiring a fair bit of soft skills, something that was, a couple of decades back, considered learnable only by humans. This would include understanding and answering non-logical questions, a la Siri, and face recognition, among many others.
ADVANTAGES OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
There are many reasons why AI is fast catching up, with its potential for making life a lot easier for humans.
Even the smartest of humans are prone to make mistakes, hence the term ‘scope for human error’ in every field. But with Artificial Intelligence that risk is reduced to almost null. An AI is not going to make errors in computation and voice recognition unless something has gone grievously wrong with its programming. Hence, they are more suitable to handle medical cases like radiosurgery and mental health issues.
Computers, smartphones, and space probes are all equipped with artificial intelligence, and they all have metal bodies. And since they are made almost entirely of metal, they are a lot less susceptible to wear and tear than humans. As a result, AI devices can safely be sent on difficult exploration missions, such as the ones to space. Deep space and sea explorations are almost always conducted initially by unmanned missions, with robots and computers. This serves manifold purposes: they do not run the risk of costing irreplaceable human or animal lives, gather and analyze data faster and more efficiently, and are certainly much better suited to encounter expected hardships.
This one is a given, but an important thumbs up for the AI side anyway. The AI can make decisions more efficiently predominantly because it is not human, and its judgment is not clouded by emotions and prejudices like a human. It does not get tired, and its mind does not get foggy with age. Hence, the device with artificial intelligence can always be relied upon to make the correct judgment without being impaired by external factors.
DISADVANTAGES OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
To be fair, it is not very likely that our AI brainchildren would actually go rogue and start controlling us like metal tyrants, but there is a fair bit of cons as far as they are concerned.
LACK OF EMOTIONAL JUDGMENT
Emotions are something that cannot really be programmed into an entity. While being unemotional may have myriad benefits, you cannot ally undermine the fact that emotional judgment does play its role in the world. Remember the scene in I, Robot where the robots save Will Smith instead of the little girl, simply because he was sunk less than the kid and had better chances of survival? This is what I mean about emotional intelligence. A robot cannot be an efficient HR person because it will never understand how to deal with the emotional vagaries of a human being.
Sure, the AI machine can certainly be built to adapt to various physical circumstances. But that is the extent of its flexibility. The machine will not be able to adapt to changing circumstances, and will be completely incapable of handling questions that it wasn’t programmed to answer. Ad, most importantly, the AI machines can never be programmed to do something creative, something completely on their own. The fine arts will always be a domain of the humans, which means that AI will remain largely underused in a great human industry: entertainment.
REDUNDANCY OF HUMANS
This is, in fact, a great downside to the invasion of the AIs. Remember how there were protests during the early days when computers were just being installed in offices? People were afraid that their posts will become redundant. Well, with the advent of AI, that seems like a very real possibility. Posts like the personal secretary will become redundant with the installation of the digital assistant. Simple tasks like ordering food will become an unnecessary chore, and people will become increasingly lazier.
If harnessed properly, artificial intelligence can improve human lives manifold. On the other hand, in the wrong hands, it can be a major weapon for widespread destruction. Like everything else, balance is the key here. Make sure that it is used prudently so that the AIs don’t start to control our lives and our own undoing. And pray they don’t gain sentience, because that never ends well.
