Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) is one such student scholarship program pioneered by the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India. The objective is to encourage the students learning basic science to pursue education in scientific research and make a career. Scholarships and contingency grants are provided to the KVPY fellows. This scholarship is given up to pre-Ph.D. level or 5 years. The overall responsibility has been given to the Indian Institute of Science. A Management Committee has been set up at the National Advisory Committee (NAC).
A monthly scholarship of Rs. 5000 and annual contingency grant of Rs. 20,000 is given to students during 1st to 3rd years of B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math. / Integrated M.Sc. /M.S.
A monthly scholarship of Rs. 7000 and annual contingency grant of Rs. 28000 is given to students during M. Sc. / 4th to 5th years of Integrated M.Sc. /M.S./M.Math./M.Stat.
The disciplines of study necessarily have to be Chemistry, Physics, Applied Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Cell Biology, Ecology, Molecular Biology, Botany, Zoology, Environmental Science or Geophysics, Physiology, Neurosciences, Bioinformatics, Marine Biology, Geology, Human Biology, Genetics, Biomedical Sciences, Materials Science.
Available to only Indian nationals, students must be enrolled in Standard XI and have secured a minimum aggregate of 75% in Mathematics and Science in the Xth Board examination. The criteria are set at 65% for students belonging to SC/ST/PWD category.
Fellowship gets activated only when if they join an undergraduate course in Basic Sciences after having secured a minimum aggregate of 60% marks in Science subjects in the XII board examination. The relaxation is 50% for SC/ST/PWD category students.

Besides, they need to acquire scores of at least 60% in the first-year final examination before taking the fellowship.
The selection of students is done on the basis of an aptitude test that is conducted in both Hindi and English. Admit cards are available on the official website http://www.kvpy.iisc.ernet.in/main/index.htm. Subsequently, an interview is conducted based on their performance in written tests, for final shortlisting of selected candidates. Applications for KVPY have been made completely online. Any hard copy has been done away with. KVPY doesn’t entertain bulk applications from schools or colleges.
The test is computer based through an easy-to-use portal. Mock aptitude tests are available on the portal to help familiarize the students who have never given online tests prior to it.
Syllabus is fixed to the analytical skills of the students and not factual knowledge.
Advertisement and Awareness:
The advertisement of KVPY appears on all national dailies on the May 11, the Technology Day. It also comes up on second Sunday of July every year. Application forms are available immediately after that. To receive the KVPY scholarship, the candidates must relinquish all other scholarships, be it government or private.
