In today’s world, we face financial, political and societal ambiguity and change. It is essential, here, for companies, governments, and other organizations to find new and innovative solutions to upcoming problems and glitches. In a world riddled with altruism and deceit, and everything moving at an incredibly fast pace, innovation becomes the only yardstick of survival for corporate giants like Apple, Microsoft, etc to stay afloat. Innovation is a critical part of leadership. Steve Jobs said, “Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower.” If leaders are not willing to look for innovative solutions, they should simply be left behind.
Innovation may not be required for all leadership situations, but it is an important decision which a leader should be able to make, irrespective of its necessity. A sense of timing and an assessment of the situation, in order to provide an apt and creative solution to a problem, are major requirements a leader must possess.
To take the inception of an innovative idea to its fruitful execution and outcome requires a certain level of perseverance and determination. Many might not accept the new idea; it is natural to want to stick to the tried-and-tested methods, to not want to have to work harder to achieve a certain set of goals. It is those who dream of a better and quicker way around hurdles and work hard simultaneously for the attainment of the same, that can break their way into the new markets and work their way to the top. They are the real leaders.
Learning to lead the innovation often proves to be as important as the innovation itself. Without proper leadership, many new and innovative products have died while on the road to success. So, finding the proper leader to lead an innovation is one important key factor to realize the success that an innovation deserves. The leader must know when to simply take the tested ways, and when to introduce new and innovative ideas and products.
It is not necessary that innovation is complicated. Its brilliance lies in the sheer simplicity it has to offer, alongside making improvements. Many a time, we have seen innovations being crushed under the impending weight of complications. Steve Jobs himself looked for simplicity in innovation. He wanted to make the user experience as simple and hassle-free as possible.
Leadership and innovation are closely-knit. In fact most, if not all, successful innovators are successful leaders too. Innovation leads to market leadership, one grand example being the Apple iPad, which was one of the first to break into the tablet market, and has been holding its ground quite strongly, while other companies are eternally trying to draw near. To take an invention to market, one needs a team, and a team must always be guided by an appropriate leader.
Jobs were made to resign from his position at Apple, people around him didn’t like him too much, and he also wasn’t very good with his communication skills. Nonetheless, he is said to be the closest example we have, to a modern-day Thomas Edison. These world-class innovators didn’t believe in living with the results of other people’s thinking. They had the grit and the courage it took, to listen to their innovative voices, and to follow their intuitions. They became true leaders, and they left behind a legacy of innovations in their wake, ones without which we would have been living in a world of darkness.
