“Sooner or later, we will have to recognise that the Earth has rights, too, to live without pollution. What mankind must know is that human beings cannot live without Mother Earth, but the planet can live without humans.” – Evo Morales
Our environment is nearly 4.5 billion years old. It existed long before mankind came into existence and will exist long after mankind has gone extinct. The modern form of humans can only be dated back to around 2,00,000 years but in this short while mankind has managed to not only deplete the nature of its resources but has also managed to disrupt the balance of the ecosystem making our environment volatile.
80% forests of our environment have already been lost. Clearing the forests for agriculture to meet the needs of an ever increasing population, to gather wood, rubber and other raw materials and to expand grazing fields for cattle is just one of many examples of how our environment has been affected. Glaciers melting due to Global Warming, Waste islands comparable to the sizes of countries emerging in different parts of ocean, Burning of fossil fuels etc. all of these act as a catalyst for the impending doom our environment is destined to.
Earth’s supply of resources is not infinite, it can be depleted and sadly the vast majority is still unaware of this simple fact. As of date the natural resources being consumed are 50% more than what earth can provide. One earth is simply not sufficient anymore to provide for our needs. Since we do not have another earth, or any planet that can sustain human life, as of now saving our environment is the only course of action we can take. It is our responsibility to keep our environment healthy to ensure the continuous survival of mankind.
Despite all the free resources provided by our environment, we are responsible for the way we use our environment, we can either choose to use the resources extensively depleting them for the future generations or we can use the natural resources sensibly ensuring a sustainable development of our surroundings while maintaining a healthy environment. Coming up with a solution for environmental problems is not a very difficult task for humans. A simple resolve to make use of the natural resources responsibly is the only step we need to take.

“Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s needs, but not one man’s greed.” – M.K. Gandhi
Use of natural resources faster than they can be replenished can lead to resource depletion. While we can always take steps to be more careful about renewable resources, responsible use of non-renewable resources is not a choice anymore. Resource depletion will leave the future generations in a world of paucity of resources, and when the life-essential resources such as breathing air and drinking water become scarce, it would ultimately lead to the doom of mankind.

Since 1760, with industrialization, exploitation of minerals has been increasing ever since. The irresponsible use of the minerals has led to mineral depletion. Rise in oil prices due to oil depletion, emission of CFCs (Chloro Fluoro Carbons) resulting in global warming, depletion of Ozone layer etc. can all be related to the irresponsible and extensive use of the natural resources by humans. Even though we have been made aware of the potential risks, no one seems to take this seriously in day to day life.
Surely governments can take steps to ensure a more sustainable use of our natural resources, in the end it is the masses which are responsible for the executions of the measures taken. If we are not ready to co-exist with our environment responsibly, no policy or rule can make our current condition better.
“If you think the environment is less important than your day to day task, try holding your breath while doing them.” – Professor Guy McPherson
It is the only home we have and it is our responsibility towards our environment to manage the resources well, a few steps like buying products that are environment friendly, recycling, spreading awareness on environmental degradation, planting trees etc. can contribute a lot towards maintaining a good natural environment. Even these small steps, if taken by everyone can add up to make a very large impact. We need to feel responsible for the environment and need to start caring for it. If we do not start taking care of our environment now, our environment will stop taking care of us.
“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not. “– The Lorax
