Essay on Emerging Technologies

Free 730 words essay on Emerging Technologies  for school and college students.

The time for incremental breakthroughs and discoveries is already passé. Now is an era of disruptive innovation. Humanity and technology have become incredibly dependent and convoluted.  Right from 3D printing to hyperloop, solar airplanes to designer antibiotics, artificial intelligence to satellites, the world is in flux with certain technologies almost magical and unfathomable just few years back. New inventions and groundbreaking researches are coming to fruition, suggesting the futurism humankind is yet to see. Some emerging technologies outweigh and outnumber the others, given the kind of disruptive solutions they offer and the scale of their economical preponderance. These are important to safeguard the planet, extrapolate human lives, and bring stability and sustainability to life.

  1. Blockchain technologies: Blockchain is basically a decentralized ledger of digital currency transactions on a peer-to-peer network. This complex technology has boosted cryptocurrency, reduced costs, and is making monumental gains and acknowledgement worldwide. It has potential applications in automation, financial services, democratic voting, healthcare, etc. It is presently undergoing implementation challenges and security scrutiny, to acquire ubiquitous legitimacy. Blockchain is a game-changer that has completely changed financial technology and has the potential to facilitate replacement of fiat money with cryptocurrency in decades to come.
  2. Deep learning approach in Artificial Intelligence: The field of artificial intelligence has already threatened the replacement of humans with machines given the kind of complex, intense, and unbelievable strides AI has already made in the field of computational learning and robotics. Deep-learning technology has enabled computers to interpret many kinds of images. Some of the most recent changes it has made is in form of convolutional neural network. It is organized in form of layers from simple shapes and edges to complex and abstract images. This technology has application in self-driving cars to recognize pedestrians carefully, insurance industry to assess damage to cars, security camera industry to assess the behavior of crowds, agriculture to predict crop yields, etc.
  3. Harvesting clean water from air: This technology can gift humanity with immeasurable boon. In this system, porous crystals called metal organic frameworks are used to pull moisture from air into its large pores and feed the water into a collector in response to low-grade heat from natural sunlight. A device utilizing this technique can harvest 2.8 liters of water every day. The consequences are tremendously useful especially in the context of climate change.
  4. Liquid fuels from sunshine: In an artificial form of photosynthesis, sunlight activated catalysts will split water molecules to convert it into oxygen and hydrogen. This hydrogen would be used in a reduction reaction to convert carbon dioxide into hydrocarbons. Like in real life, this technique would just use water, sunlight and carbon dioxide. This would mean that carbon dioxide produced from combustion gets transformed back to fuel rather than being an addition to atmosphere in form of greenhouse gases.
  5. Human cell atlas: This international project is about setting to detail how every cell in the body works. Such extraordinary information would provide a deeper understanding of how human body works and diseases occur. The atlas will include information from existing as well as future research projects. The participants of this project classified a large majority of the protein-coding genes in humans using a combination of genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and antibody-based profiling, which identifies location.
  6. Precision farming: The predominant idea is to combine sensors and real-time data analytics to improve yields. The elements used are sensors, robots, GPS, mapping tools, and data-analytics software. Drones with mounted cameras are used to send accurate images. Farmers can decide when to plant and harvest crops. Not just time management, this system reduces water and chemical use. Resources are conserved and productivity shoots up. Some of the biggest companies such as Monsanto, DuPont, Bayer, John Deere, and Dow are developing this technology, in addition to support from NASA, NOAA, etc. This technology can be developed to accentuate plant “phenotyping”, so that crops are produced with enhanced nutrition.
  7. Quantum Computing: Every major organization and nation-state is investing huge human resource and capital to develop quantum computing which tackles complex problems by harnessing the power of quantum mechanics. Its development will have applications in secure computing, machine learning, cryptography, quantum chemistry, material science, optimization problems, sampling, and quantum dynamics. It would be exponentially faster than traditional computers, with unparalleled and non-comparable safety. In this era of big data and predictive analysis, this technology is indeed a quantum leap in computing.
