Free 500 words essay and meaning of necessity is the mother of invention quote for school and college students.
Meaning: The proverb ‘necessity is the mother of invention’ means that when we need something strongly, we are never satisfied until we get it. We think and work hard to obtain it, putting all our efforts in it. It is the divine discontent of the human mind that gave birth to most of the great things through inventions and discovery.
When our wants become necessity, it compels us to work for obtaining it. It is for satisfying the need in us that we find different and new ways leading to inventions. These needs can be of various degrees, ranging from trivial to compelling. Almost everything we use in our day to day life is an invention that was the result man’s endeavour of getting what had become a necessity. The want of ease and comfort led to the inventions of luxuries. Had there been no need of staying warm in winters, there had been no clothes, no fire or other heating systems that we use today.
We all remember the fable of a thirsty crow that collected the pebbles and dropped them in the jar for raising the water level so that he could satiate his thirst. Had he been not so thirsty, he would not have thought of doing anything at all. So is with the need of humans. The British and the French had blocked the German ports during the Great War and the supply of the oil, sugar and many essentials were stopped. It was then that they discovered the synthetic products and the substitutes for them for overcoming the difficulty and need of the ongoing circumstance.
We all know how bow and arrows were invented. It was the need of primitive men for hunting the running animal or a flying bird for food. Britain is an island, cut off from the rest of the world. The residents of Britain would have stayed isolated on the island had they been self sufficient. But that’s not the case. It is their need for the materials that they have developed means and methods to obtain what they don’t have.
Greenland is covered with ice which stays as it is all the year round. There is no wood or any other material available there for making the houses. It was the need of protection from the intense cold and snow that compelled them to make houses from that very snow. That was how igloos were invented. They’re needed to communicate to far distance made them invent posts, telegrams and then landline phones. It was their need for commutation that led to the invention of wheels and vehicles. The fan, the cooking range, entertainment range, everything satisfies our need. If you look around, every invention is the child of the need of human- either trifling of pressing. Each material of basic need or luxuries fulfils one or some of our needs. So, it can be safely said that the proverb has hit the right spot that “Necessity is the mother of inventions”.
