“Everything is made of chemicals”. These are the words my father used to tell me whenever I used to voice my displeasure of leaning chemistry to him. He was a chemistry graduate and therefore would never tolerate any insult of his favorite subject. However, I could not make head or tails of why water was named as H20 and carbon dioxide was named as CO2. I could not understand why chemicals have two names, one generic and the other technical. Somehow, I cleared the chemistry exam as a student, and I went on to become an engineer. However, it was not until I became a freelance writer that I came to know the real importance of chemistry.

Importance of Chemistry
I found that chemistry was used in the following areas:
- Chemistry is a part of healthcare and beauty. When we are sick, we get ourselves tested in the laboratory. This is done to find out whether there is anything wrong in the body physically or chemically. The prognostic estimations carried out, the medical pills, the antibiotics, the different chemicals used in the testing of our body; all of these are a part of chemistry. In treating diseases, Chemotherapy and Genome mapping are a result of chemistry. We use beauty creams and face masks that are made from chemicals.
- Chemistry is important for industries and transport too. Our country runs on industries. The industries in turn run on fuel. This fuel is a product of chemical processes. Many manufacturing processes taking place in our industries involve chemical reactions. Some of them give out harmful effluent into the atmosphere and vitiate it. Our country and its industries run on transport. Without an efficient transport system, everything will stop. The transport system requires fuel for running. The fuel comes from chemical reactions. Therefore, chemistry is a part of industries and transport.
- Chemistry is important for food security and agriculture. The famous green revolution to improve agricultural produce so as to ensure food security was triggered by the use of inorganic chemical fertilizers. These made the soil fertile and increased its output. Pesticides were used in the crop to preserve the grains from pests, rats and mice. This facilitated their efficient storage. Now, we have genetically modified food grains, which are a result of chemistry. Today, the refrigerants that we use in cold storages and the preservatives used to increase the longevity of stored products are both a result of chemistry.
- The world came to know the scientific and technological effect of chemistry when atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The two cities remember the consequences of that holocaust, even today. Today, we talk of the fear of weapons of mass destruction, terrorists talk about RDX, and nuclear reactors require nuclear power, all of which requires the knowledge of chemistry. Just as chemistry has given rise to destructive weapons, it has also given us safety suites, NBC resistant bunkers and forensic science. The third mentioned helps us in solving sophisticated crimes by using forensic investigation methods.
- Chemistry is also involved in the food we eat. We find chemistry right from the time we start cooking the food to the time it leaves our bodies in the form of excreta. Throughout this process, we have to depend on chemistry to explain to us various chemical reactions that occur during this period.
- Chemistry is also involved in cleaning. The various dishwashers and clothes washers that we use to help us clean the dirt and mud on clothes and vessels are made up of chemicals. Soaps and disinfectants that we use to clean our bodies and our bathrooms are made from chemistry.
- Chemistry is also involved in environmental issues. It explains why a chemical is classified as a nutrient and another as a pollutant. Even when we breathe, we inhale oxygen and give out carbon dioxide. This again is explained by chemistry. Therefore, we feel better when we are in an atmosphere of excess oxygen, while we feel nauseous when we are in a climate where there is ample of carbon dioxide.
Chemistry is important in everyday life
Thus, I have explained why the subject of chemistry is studied right from the school level. If we did not study chemistry, we would never be able to explain many things that happen in our daily lives. For example, we would never be able to explain how food that we consume comes out as excreta and urine from our bodies. This is due to a chemical reaction happening in our bodies.
