Ways in which psychology is used in our daily lives
Psychology is a branch of science that is useful in many facets of our daily lives. The following are the ways in which psychology is being used in our lives:
- Pursuing us to purchase consumer products through advertising
Advertising uses psychology to persuade its customers to purchase the product being advertised. The advert tries to make you laugh or cry, thus eliciting an emotional response from you and then asks you to send an SMS message to a number or send some money to a particular account. Due to the emotional influence, the advert has on you; you go ahead and send the message or the funds, without thinking again.
- Listening to a friend’s problems
While a friend narrates his problems to you, if you use words like ‘yes’ or make sounds like ‘mmmm’, he will know that you are paying attention to his stories. This technique is extensively used in counseling.
- Repeating works back to the speaker and mirroring their body language
In a conversation, if a person is talking and the other repeats the words back and mirrors the body language of the speaker, then that puts the speaker at east and gives him the signal that he need not fear the listener.
- Robert J. Sternberg improved his relationships using psychology
Robert is a PhD and is well known for carrying out research in areas he is weak in, in order to improve himself. He was not good at love. He was known to have many failed relationships. Robert used psychology to help him improve on his weaknesses. He developed solutions for various problems of daily life. He took the problems from his own life and found solutions for them. In the process, he also helped other people who were having the same problems.
- Psychology can help reduce terrorism
Lisa Logan, a self-defense instructor taught her students to study the psychology of the attacker to understand how to overcome them. Using psychology to pinpoint how the attacker thinks can reduce the likelihood of an attack happening. This can be applied to terrorism and terrorists. If security forces understand the psychology of the terrorist attacking them, they will be able to reduce the probability of a terrorist attack happening.
- Psychology can help cure mental disorders
Doctors enter the brains of their mental patients to understand the reason for their mental degeneration. They evoke the childhood memory of the individual. This memory is also called as episodic memory. Coon and Mitterer state that episodic memory is an auto-biological record of the personal experiences of an individual. This memory can be used to find out if any traumatic incidents had happened during an individual’s childhood, which rendered him mentally unstable. Then, this malady can be cured.
- Psychology can help us educate an individual
A teacher can use psychology in school to teach her pupils. She has to understand her pupils and why they are behaving the way, they are. Once she has done that, she can tailor her teaching pattern according to the student’s requirement. She has to understand the best way in which the student understands. If the student recalls well by linking certain concepts to some everyday triggers in his life, then the teacher should follow the linking theory to teach him. If the student is able to learn by rote then she should encourage him to do so.
Thus, we have seen the applications of psychology in everyday life. This subject may not be offered at the school level, but it has wide application in teaching, solving crimes, curing mentally unstable patients, etc. There are other applications of psychology I have not touched them because it was not necessary. Suffice to say that psychology is a very useful science, which helps in our daily lives.Tags: psychology in everyday life, psychology in our everyday life, biological principles in daily lives, Psychology and its application in everyday life, “Psychology in Everyday Life
